Explaining the Name

In Acts, chapter 3, the Bible tells us of Peter and John walking into the temple and encountering a lame man sitting outside the temple begging for money; something he had done all of his life. Peter didn’t have any money to give…but he met the man’s greatest need and in the name, and by the power of Jesus Christ, he told the man to rise and walk.

The place where this man was seated was just outside the gate called, “Beautiful.” The Greek word for Beautiful in this passage is, “horaios.” This word only appears two other times in the Scriptures. In Matthew, chapter 23, Jesus called out the Pharisees for their religious piety; he called them “beautiful,” horaios, on the outside but accused them of being dead on the inside; they showed well, they played church well, but they neglected the more important matters of the law — justice, mercy and faithfulness. And then Paul used this word in his letter to the Romans when he said, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring the Good news of Christ to the world…the dirty, swollen, and worn out feet of someone who is doing justice, loving in mercy and walking humbly before God. The greatest thing about this word, horaios, is that is also means, “belonging to the right hour or season.”

If you aren’t what you would call a Christian, but would like to take this journey with us and help the less fortunate, we would certainly welcome the help.

If you do identify yourself with the body of Christ, then as Christians, we are called to serve those within our church families and also those who are sitting outside the gates of our temples and cathedrals. Now is both the right hour and season to show Christ to the world through our testimonies and through our actions. We are called to serve others and help the world discover a beautiful, new life with Christ they never thought possible; to help them heal through the difficulties of life so they may have beautiful feet to then help us bring the Gospel to the world. Now…is…the time…we are plan “A”…there is no plan “B”…what are you going to do?
